The Staffordshire Bull Terriers have great strength for their size. They are stocky and muscular but should also be active and agile. The breed is the 5th most popular dog in the UK (its place of origin), and it is the only breed to have the words “totally reliable” in its breed standard. Furthermore, the Stafford is one of only two breeds from over 190 recognized by the UK Kennel Club to have a mention of the breeds suitability with children. The Staffie is renowned for loyalty to their owners and stability of temperament, qualities which make them good family pets when properly bred and socialised, they are fond of people, playful, energetic and not naturally aggressive. They are normally excellent with children and adults alike and their small size adds to their appeal as a family pet: however they have lots of energy and can be quite vocal, which makes them more than a handful for inexperienced owners. The dogs origins as a fighting breed can make the staffie prone to taking on any other dog that seeks to fight . For this reason, staffords should not be brought into close contact with dogs that are aggressive or snappy towards other dogs. It is wise to avoid such confrontations, bearing in mind the strength and fearlessness of the staffie. However , staffords will play or co-habit happily with other dogs that are not aggressive.
